Celebrating the Past as We Ring in a New Year with the Founders of Sun
As we welcome a new year, we sat down with Steve and Margaret, the visionary founders of Sun Construction, to reflect on their incredible journey from humble beginnings to industry leaders.
A Bright Idea
Sun Construction’s story began in 1978, rooted in a commitment to solar energy. “We started by installing solar panels on roofs and hot water heaters in basements,” Steve recalls. The name “Sun Construction” was inspired by their early focus on renewable energy, which set the tone for their future endeavors. Initially concentrating on residential projects, they quickly recognized the potential for growth beyond the home. This foundational commitment to sustainability not only shaped their business model but also instilled a sense of purpose that continues to guide them today.
Faith and Perseverance
In 1982, during a pivotal Bible study, Steve felt compelled to seek divine guidance. “The next day, I was let go from my job,” he shares, reflecting on the unexpected turn that led him to embrace entrepreneurship. After Steve was released from his position amid a recession, Steve took on odd jobs while Margaret worked full-time to support their family. This period of uncertainty became a catalyst for change when they began collaborating with others in the solar industry.
Overcoming Challenges
The early years were fraught with challenges. “We had seven liens on our home and two $50,000 mortgages,” Steve remembers vividly. Despite these financial burdens, they persevered through sheer determination and faith. Their first significant projects came through working with various companies in the solar sector, but setbacks like bankruptcies and market fluctuations tested their resolve. In February 1985, they officially established Sun Construction & Design Services, marking a new chapter filled with hope and resilience.
Growth and Innovation
From those challenging beginnings, Sun Construction rapidly expanded its portfolio. By 1985, they transitioned from struggling to thriving, completing projects for notable clients, and securing contracts that would elevate their reputation in the industry. “We went from $750,000 in work in 1985 to $12 million in just a few years,” Steve states. Their focus on high-tech facilities and relationship-building with clients fueled this remarkable growth, allowing them to adapt to changing market demands while maintaining their core values.
Family Values
Margaret’s involvement brought a family-oriented approach to the business. “We’ve always prioritized our employees and their well-being,” she explains. Her transition from real estate to human resources allowed her to foster a supportive environment where employees felt valued and empowered. Together, they cultivated a culture that emphasized honesty and character, ensuring that every team member contributed positively to the company’s mission while supporting their families.
Looking to the Future
As Sun Construction continues to evolve, the founders’ vision remains clear. “We want the company to be innovative, successful, and a ministry to everyone who works here,” they affirm. Their hope is for Sun to continue providing job security and treating all employees with equal importance.
From solar panels to complex construction projects, Sun Construction’s journey exemplifies the power of faith, perseverance, and adaptability. As we enter a new year, we celebrate the enduring legacy of its founders and look forward to the bright future ahead.
